The sea urchin spines in these earrings come from the Slate Pencil Urchin (Heterocentrotus Mamillatus). It's a tropical sea urchin from the Indo-Pacific region, most abundant in Hawaii. They can grow up to 10 inches in diameter. Slate Pencil Urchins are nocturnal animals. During the day, they use their spines to attach themselves under or on top of rocks or to anchor themselves inside crevices. At night, they feed on algae, corals and sponges.

The earrings pictured are 13mm long, 3mm wide at their widest point and 1.5mm thick. They're deep purple blending into a bright pumpkin orange with a crimson tip. They're set in sterling silver with a sterling post and backing. Expect slight variation in size and color per pair as these are natural specimen.
